How child support is calculated in Georgia

Georgia’s Child Support Guidelines (O.C.G.A. § 19-6-15) follow the income shares model: the parents' combined adjusted gross monthly income sets a basic obligation from the statutory table, which is shared in proportion to income and adjusted for health insurance, child care, parenting time and other items. The Georgia Child Support Commission runs the official online calculator.[1]

Table runs to $40,000 combined adjusted gross monthly income (since July 1, 2024)

Senate Bill 454 updated the table for the first time since 2006 and raised its top from $30,000 to $40,000 of combined monthly income; above $40,000 a high-income deviation may be considered.[2]

Official text · 2024 Updates to the Child Support Guidelines

“The BCSO Table’s vertical axis (the parents’ combined gross monthly income) increases from $30,000 to $40,000. Accordingly, cases in which the parents’ combined adjusted gross income exceeds $40,000.00 are eligible for a possible high-income deviation.”

Shared parenting time

Parenting Time Adjustment formula replaced the old parenting-time deviation (SB 454)

SB 454 removed the discretionary parenting-time deviation and created a Parenting Time Adjustment that uses a formula, and replaced the low-income deviation with a Low-Income Adjustment.[2]

Official text · 2024 Updates to the Child Support Guidelines

“3. Removal of the Parenting Time Deviation and creation of a Parenting Time Adjustment that includes a formula.”

Income counted

Gross income, adjusted (combined adjusted gross income)

The table is indexed by the parents' combined adjusted gross monthly income; adjustments to gross income include self-employment taxes, preexisting orders and qualified children.[1]
