In Winneshiek County custody cases, Iowa Code § 598.41 lets the court, before ruling on a joint custody request, require the parties to take part in custody mediation to decide whether joint custody is in the child's best interest.[2] The court may not do so where a history of domestic abuse exists or where direct physical or significant emotional harm is likely, and it may have the child take part if advisable.[2] Custody mediation costs are paid by the parties and taxed as court costs.[2] In other domestic relations cases, § 598.7 lets the court order mediation, and any agreement is not enforceable until the court approves it.[3] The mediators listed below are on the Iowa Judicial Branch's statewide list of family law mediators and name Winneshiek County among the counties they serve.[1]
