How this list is built: these are certified family mediators whose official Michigan roster record lists an attorney or in-state Bar member background. In mediation they work as neutrals: a mediator doesn’t represent or advise either side, even if they’re a lawyer. If you want legal advice about your own case, hire your own attorney. Mediation in Allegan County's circuit court follows the Michigan Court Rules, under which all civil cases are subject to alternative dispute resolution unless a statute or rule provides otherwise.[2] A trial court that uses ADR must adopt a written plan by local administrative order, naming an ADR clerk and saying how its mediator list is kept and how indigent parties get access.[2] After consulting the parties, the court may order a civil case to mediation, and it may send any contested domestic relations issue to mediation on a stipulation, a party's motion or its own initiative.[2] Domestic cases may be exempted for reasons such as child abuse, domestic abuse or safety concerns.[2] Mediators listed below are based in the county and appear on neighboring circuit courts' approved lists, mainly Ottawa County's and Berrien County's.[1][3]

Court-connected mediation in Michigan: Michigan circuit courts keep their own lists of mediators who met court-rule training requirements, and court clerks appoint only from those lists. Some courts encourage parties to pick their own mediator; the court rules themselves were not reviewed.
Private mediation in Michigan: No state license for private mediators was found in the sources reviewed. A State Bar of Michigan ethics opinion says a lawyer-mediator may not draft all the divorce papers for both parties while acting only as mediator.
