Grand Traverse County belongs to Michigan's Thirteenth Judicial Circuit, which also serves Antrim and Leelanau counties from Traverse City.[1][9] Under the Michigan Court Rules, the circuit court may order a civil case to mediation after consulting the parties, and may send any contested domestic relations issue to mediation on a written stipulation, a party's motion or its own initiative.[10] In civil cases, if the parties do not agree on a mediator, the ADR clerk assigns one from the approved list by rotation.[10] The circuit publishes separate lists of court-approved general civil and domestic relations mediators, each showing the mediator's own fee.[1][9] Both lists also name CRS, Inc., a nonprofit whose volunteers mediate free or at low cost for people who cannot afford a private mediator.[1][9] Most mediators listed below are on those lists.[1][9]

Court-connected mediation in Michigan: Michigan circuit courts keep their own lists of mediators who met court-rule training requirements, and court clerks appoint only from those lists. Some courts encourage parties to pick their own mediator; the court rules themselves were not reviewed.
Private mediation in Michigan: No state license for private mediators was found in the sources reviewed. A State Bar of Michigan ethics opinion says a lawyer-mediator may not draft all the divorce papers for both parties while acting only as mediator.
