How this list is built: these are certified family mediators whose official Michigan roster record lists an attorney or in-state Bar member background. In mediation they work as neutrals: a mediator doesn’t represent or advise either side, even if they’re a lawyer. If you want legal advice about your own case, hire your own attorney. How does mediation work in Grand Traverse County?

Grand Traverse County belongs to Michigan's Thirteenth Judicial Circuit, which also serves Antrim and Leelanau counties from Traverse City.[2][1] Under the Michigan Court Rules, the circuit court may order a civil case to mediation after consulting the parties, and may send any contested domestic relations issue to mediation on a written stipulation, a party's motion or its own initiative.[9] In civil cases, if the parties do not agree on a mediator, the ADR clerk assigns one from the approved list by rotation.[9] The circuit publishes separate lists of court-approved general civil and domestic relations mediators, each showing the mediator's own fee.[2][1] Both lists also name CRS, Inc., a nonprofit whose volunteers mediate free or at low cost for people who cannot afford a private mediator.[2][1] Most mediators listed below are on those lists.[2][1]

Court-connected mediation in Michigan: Michigan circuit courts keep their own lists of mediators who met court-rule training requirements, and court clerks appoint only from those lists. Some courts encourage parties to pick their own mediator; the court rules themselves were not reviewed.

Private mediation in Michigan: No state license for private mediators was found in the sources reviewed. A State Bar of Michigan ethics opinion says a lawyer-mediator may not draft all the divorce papers for both parties while acting only as mediator.
