How to become a mediator in Colorado
Who certifies or lists mediators in Colorado?
Office of Dispute Resolution (State Court Administrator's Office) selects and contracts its own roster of ODR neutrals (minimum 40 hours of basic mediation training) and sets minimum standards for them under C.R.S. 13-22-305; parties choose and agree on the mediator themselves.
This is general information, not legal advice. It covers Colorado only. Rules change, so check the official source before you enroll in a course.
What training and continuing education does Colorado require?
These are the court mediator credentials and rosters we could confirm from Colorado’s official sources. Where a detail isn’t confirmed, we say so instead of guessing.
| Credential or roster | Initial training | Continuing education |
|---|---|---|
| Court-roster general (ODR contract neutrals) Office of Dispute Resolution, State Court Administrator's Office (Colorado Judicial Branch) | At least 40 hours 'hands-on' mediation skills training | 10 hours per year (at least 2 hours peer review with other ODR neutrals) (annual (documented with contract renewal)) |
Other requirements
- Court-roster general (ODR contract neutrals): ODR hires only experienced mediators; interview/contract by ODR Director with judicial district; orientation; possible mentorship (observation/co-mediation, at own expense); follow Model Standards (and Family/Divorce Model Standards for domestic relations cases)
Do I need a state credential to mediate in Colorado?
State credentials and court rosters mainly matter for court-ordered or court-connected cases, where a court may require a mediator from its own list. If you plan to mediate cases that people bring to you privately, check whether Colorado or your profession has any rule that applies. See do I need a mediator certified in my state?
