How to become a mediator in Washington

Who certifies or lists mediators in Washington?

No statewide court mediator roster found. For family cases, the mediator may be family court or mental health agency staff or any person or agency the court designates (RCW 26.09.015). Dispute resolution center plans must provide trained and certified mediators (RCW 7.75).

What training and continuing education does Washington require?

We found no statewide mediator license or certification in Washington’s official sources. Courts or programs that use mediators may set their own rules, so ask the court or program where you want to work. Here is what the official sources say:

Do I need a state credential to mediate in Washington?

State credentials and court rosters mainly matter for court-ordered or court-connected cases, where a court may require a mediator from its own list.
