How to become a mediator in North Dakota

Who certifies or lists mediators in North Dakota?

State court administrator maintains rosters of neutrals for civil mediation, civil arbitration, domestic relations/contested child proceedings mediation, and post-judgment domestic relations and estate mediation, with minimum training standards (N.D.R.Ct. 8.9). Parties may choose a neutral who is not on the roster.

Other requirements

  • Civil mediator roster: Written credentials to SCA; SCA may charge a reasonable roster fee and yearly renewal fee
  • Domestic relations / contested child proceedings mediator roster: Bachelor's in behavioral science plus 2 years family/child intervention, or master's plus 1 year, or law license plus 2 years domestic relations experience
  • Post-judgment domestic relations mediator roster: Law license plus 2 years domestic relations experience
  • Post-judgment estate mediator roster: Law license

Do I need a state credential to mediate in North Dakota?

State credentials and court rosters mainly matter for court-ordered or court-connected cases, where a court may require a mediator from its own list.
